[It would be nice to see the character creation intro windows redone (using a mix of the starting text for race / class and what we have already about the mechanics (but the mechanics only for the first login of an account, rather than every character.) The race/class text / intro to the world should remain for each character's initial login, to help facilitate a player's creation of roleplaying.]
Currently, a new character begins life in Domdaria at the center of Market Square, Toldara City; then he/she is told to hail Boram and they may begin an introductory quest to go around hailing some people in the city. Then there are other low level quests advertised, and guilds which are designed for specific classes to come in to buy gear and maybe have a quest or two.
Towards the end of the Toldara Update, it would be great to have a new system in place which produces an immersible dynamic experience and leads a player into defining the specific roles of his/her character in the lands. This system would not steer the player into a linear progression, but rather give them enough information and opportunities to shape goals for a unique progression of their race / class and faction combinations. The finalized version would make a new character starting in Toldara to be such as this:
The new character begins in a location based on race / class combination to some degree. The new intro popup windows appear, or at least the text is displayed in the main feed to make it feel like the start of a new book. (Gets people in the mood of a story, rather than just a WoW clone.) A timer begins; if the player doesn't move in 2 minutes, a child NPC is created and it attempts to get the user to play a game of 'tag' in order to teach movement, and then lead them to Boram who has new tutorial like system of quests / scripts. This would be a crafty way to have a tutorial system in there, but without having to bother veteran players. Near the starting locations would be room objects, descriptions, items or npcs which would be designed for new players to notice and lead them towards places to find, npcs to meet and activities to do. There would be some choice in guilds for a player to join depending on class / race, and ways to interact with factions for better or worse. There will be ways to be a good citizen and gain the esteem of city officials, and ways to be a criminal.
In short, the real trick will be an easy to grasp, effective tutorial system and carefully designed starting system for new players, while also having effective starting resources for minimal hassle (better if fun,) for veteran players.
The priorities of each component of the system need to be evaluated and ranked for implementation. The final description would be ideal for launch, but beta launch could be a barebones system to be functional, fun and inspirational, (make players drool for more content to create more interesting possibilities of types of characters.)
